Art is back. During lockdown, of course, it never truly left. But the joys of a solo mooch around a gallery, or a family outing, were put on hold. 
But now, from May 1 in some parts of the UK, and 17 May in England, the nation s galleries and art museums can welcome visitors again at last. Some smaller commercial galleries have already reopened, as they’re classed as “non-essential retail” and were thus able to welcome visitors (and customers) back, as other shops were, from April 12. ....

The artist’s output was vanishingly small, but extremely carefully composed. 
 
In the course of her career, Winifred Knights reversed the traditional artistic trajectory. She had little trouble in becoming a painter and none at all in winning early acclaim and glittering prizes. Where she struggled was in producing the pictures to sustain her reputation and grow into a figure of substance. It was a struggle she eventually lost.
Knights’s output was vanishingly small, perhaps as few as five significant works over a career of more than 25 years. What she did leave was a great number of preparatory works – drawings, studies and trial pictures – that are evidence of both her talent and a working method that took meticulousness to the point of obsession. Her way of picture-making resulted in some of the most distinctive British works of the interwar years but was ultimately self-sabotaging. ....

Western art before the 20th-century was dominated by male artists. There had been celebrated female painters, such as Artemisia Gentileschi, Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun and Rosa Bonheur, but it wasn’t until the early 1900s that women began to enjoy comparable success with their male counterparts. 
The exhibition features more than sixty works by the four artists
Now a new exhibition at the Laing Art Gallery explores this breakthrough which has been taken for granted for nearly a century. The roots of this lay in the Victorian era, when those born, raised and educated in the later decades of the 1800s were able to seize upon the huge changes in society, occurring during a time of burgeoning modernism, transformation and increasing emancipation. ....
