Plastics and some composite materials. things like the overhead bins, the seat cushions, the cosmetic bulk heads, all those typically should still be floating. in a lot of cases, they are going to be intermingled with wire and other debris, so you may have a lot of smaller pieces mixed in, which might look like a larger piece from the satellite or the air. so the bottom line is, jim, the longer the search goes on, the more scattered the debris field is going to be and the harder it is to track down that plane. and our aviation analyst just made the point at the end of a long flight when the wing tanks would be empty, that s a very buoyant piece of the plane. you have a lot of air in those tanks. just a possibility. and depends on the speed at which it hit the water. i also want to ask you about the pinger. this is the sound that searchers are listening for right now. we have an example of that sound ....

Water. what do you think when you see these images? i can t make that assessment until i have my eyes on it, but it s conceivable. it s very conceivable that it s a wing. my assumption is with the departure that took place with this wing or with the flight that the wing tanks, the center wing tanks were empty which would provide air space. they allow them to float. who knows at this point whether they are still submerge d. another pilot and analyst raised the possibility that this was rather than being one contiguous piece, it was a collection of pieces wrapped up in wire. you picture something hitting the water at that speed, you could have a collection of debris like that. yeah, sure, if it was still partially attached, but i think currents depending on the size of the pieces would throw it in different directions. ....

They would tear off the engine mounts and they are designed to fail. and you would have damage to the wing in the neighbor hod or half or three- quarters in the neighborhood in 80 foot. i am heart eped bow such a large object floating since the machine now out of gas. wing tanks were empty and they will float. it would be the wing tanks that would float and stay on the surface. the engines would break off. sorry to interrupt. is this a chance on the weather changing that this piece, to could sink in the next couple of hours and no longer be a pose of evidence? that is a real thought. you have a slit in it and gets ....

The ground on the runway in kuala lumpur and take off in just a moment. fuel will be the real consideration. we believe they were loaded with seven hours of fuel. let me show you something here on the dash board. i can call up the fuel load. it s listed here on this tv screen and these are the wing tanks. it s got, well, nearly 20,000 kilos of fuel in each wing tank and nearly 30,000 in the center tank. our total fuel is nearly 70,000 kilos. that s not anywhere near as full of fuel as this plane could possibly be. but it s a good start. we think that s what we were at. so if you would, please, take us off, mitchell. and the whole idea here, carol, is to, again, this aircraft is simulating everything we know about flight 370, including, of course, they took off at night and were originally headed to beijing. that s what they fueled for. they would have given themselves extra fuel. every pilot would do that to build in for any potential ....

Absolutely be they weren t absolutely out of yule, they would have been allow on fuel to get that far, and as you point out, the wing tanks are incredibly robust and probably would provide a lot of buoyancy the large sections of wing. that s right. now, we don t know what this altitude was flying at. it could have been high altitude in the 30, 40,000 area where airliners typically fly at or could have been low altitude. the flying speeds, though, once you do run out of fuel, that airplane will be trimmed for that speed. so let s say it was flying at 300 miles an hour. the airplane will be trimmed for that speed. if it loses thrust, the aircraft will descend at that speed and maintain all the way until impact if it were to hit something. jon: i spent probably half an hour on the phone this morning with a 777 pilot who flies a trans-pacific and atlanta trick route for a major airline, he was as mystified as i am as what could have happened to this ....
