Article content As council braces for a heated debate Monday on dropping the residential speed limit from 50 to 40 km/h, Mayor Drew Dilkens is pitching an alternative approach to preventing cars from bombing through neighbourhoods. “I want to do something that actually makes a difference and I don’t believe reducing the posted speed limit to 40 is going to be a sufficient deterrent. I really don’t think it’s going to work,” Dilkens said on Tuesday, in advance of Monday’s meeting when a very close vote is expected on the proposed blanket speed limit drop on residential streets. It would cost around $734,000 to implement, largely to erect signs on the many arterial roads where the 50 km/h limit would remain. Dilkens is proposing that council instead create a $1-million capital fund to pay for speed bumps and other traffic calming measures that residents could get installed on their street if they get a prescribed percentage perhaps 50, 60 or 70 per cent signi ....
