Hey there, everyone. welcome to weekends with alex witt. it s a little past 1:00 p.m. here in the east, 10:00 a.m. out west. let s get to what s happening now. there are bitter-cold temperatures not seen in years, and it s likely to set records across the midwest, northeast, and the south. more than 140 million people are bracing for a dangerous arctic blast that s barrelling down on a huge portion of this country. check out the scene around indianapolis. this was just a short while ago there where the heavy snowfall is already coming down. 1200 miles of windchill warnings and advisories are in effect. icy weather is already causing big problems out on the roads. i ve been here for almost an hour. it s a sheet of ice. cars are just spinning out. real slippery. real icy. people falling. we almost fell. just trying to get home. well, let s go straight to the weather channel s mike seidel, who s joining me from indianapolis with the latest on the conditions there. mike, looks like ....
Down, certainly as are the temperatures. they re dropping fast. there are 1200 miles of windchill warnings and advisories. icy weather is already causing big problems on the roads and in the air. and check out this delta jet. it skid off a run way at new york s jfk, temporarily halting all flights. no one was injured. meanwhile, the arctic air mass will deliver unprecedented drops in temperatures. indianapolis today will go from 34 degrees to minus 12. tomorrow, cleveland heads from a high of 20 to minus 10. new york city will see a 37-degree drop from 50 to 13. so what is causing the temperatures to take such a nose dive? let s go straight to the weather channel s mike seidel with the answers. as usual, mike s out in the thick of it. hi, mike. you re there in indianapolis, where it looks pretty, but no. not so much for you. reporter: it is pretty. the temperatures are so warm we re sitting around 31 degrees. there s the capitol dome. can you make it out? ....
Days. as we head into sunday, the push of arctic air begins to work into the midwest. we re still quiet around the northeast for sunday and temperatures are back to the 40s, look what happens in chicago. down to 10 degrees. these are the high temperatures, 7 below is the warmest we get in minneapolis. and overnight sunday into monday, we re talking about windchills that could be as cold as 50, maybe even 60 below zoer in places like minnesota. these are your temperatures, warm across places like boston on monday and then the cold blasts the midwest, 10 below is the high temperature with blowing snow in chicago and minneapolis a high of 14 degrees below zero. record setting cold perhaps across the midwest for monday. it s going to last into tuesday as well. that s why those windchill warnings are in effect now for this time period. and eventually that cold does make its way towards the northeast. here s the forecast for tuesday, teens have settled in. i know it doesn t seem like ....

With cold temperatures and with snow in some areas. especially lake-effect snow that kicked up across the lake you have cold air going over the lake waters. we are talking feet of snow in some of those areas right off the lake. i want to talk about how cold it is in the midwest and into the northeast. it has been years for some of us. you factor in the wind that s really what makes it feel so cold. we have windchill warnings in effect across portions of wisconsin and minnesota. widespread advisories across iowa and areas of the northeast. up state new york and northern parts of new england where we have the windchill warnings. what it means is it is so cold it is dangerous if you are not properly bundled up. 12 below zero is what it feels like when you head out the door in places across minnesota much ....
