Wind component, it can lead to whiteout conditions. travel going to be very dicey in some spots. even farther south away from the snow, you still have wind advisories in place, looking at wind gusts of 50 to 60 miles per hour. that could lead to trees down and additional power outages. now we jump to the west coast where we re looking at the next system arriving as we speak to states like washington, oregon and california. we re already starting to see coastal implications of those heavy rain bands and snow starting to pick up in the higher elevations. it will continue to spread south into central california and the intermountain west. this is going to be a pretty impactful storm over the next 48 hours as it spreads out. it s going to be multiple waves here. you can see a lot of those trickling in across multiple states as we go through the evening tonight and especially ....
We head into the afternoon and especially into the evening hours. so you still have over 25 million people under flood watches for today and even into tomorrow. but it s not just about the rain that s falling now. you also have to take into account all of the rain that has already fallen in just the last two to three weeks. take, for example, reno, sacramento, san francisco, and even santa barbara. all of these locations have picked up roughly six months worth of rain in just two weeks. so, again, they need the rain. they want the rain. they just don t want that much in a very short period of time. now we re talking about adding even more rain on top of it. the first atmospheric river is under away as we speak. that s what s bringing the rain and snow to a lot of the areas today. we get a brief break late tonight and into early sunday morning. but by the time we get to sunday afternoon, that next round begins to push back in, and it is expected to last all the way through monday. it s ....
Rain in that short time period. here s the first wave. as we go through the day today, it will spread southward in towards areas of southern california, nevada, and arizona. then you get a little bit of a break sunday morning before the next round begins to arrive sunday afternoon and evening and will continue through the day on monday. it s not just the rain and snow but also the wind component. you ve got a lot of wind advisories here across the state as well as other state where is those wind gusts could be up around that 50-mile-per-hour range and even higher once you start to go up in elevation. when we talk about rain, most of these areas widespread, especially along the coast, picking up maybe 2 to 3 inches of rain. when we talk about snow, especially in the sierras, now you re talking 2 to 3 feet. and that s just the weekend. through monday, it s 3 to 6 feet worth of snow. the bit of good news is if we get to the end of the week, just got to go a few more days, we will finally ....
Likely over half of the u.s. population is under one type of those alerts. now the other thing too is it is the wind component. not only is it making it bitter cold outside in terms of the wind chill but it means anywhere that it is snowing, it is taking that snow and blowing it around, reducing visibility. in some cases less than a quarter of a mile. making travel more hazard os than it already was. and then when we talk about the snow, where it is expected to be, most of the snow for toast will be across portions of the north east and the midwest where we re still looking at lake effect enhancement. you will have some of the areas along the great lakes where you re talking one to three feet additional snow. so, again, the concern there is, kate, is not only do you have the snow making travel dangerous, you also have the cold air so when people are without power, again those cold ....
A one-hour period. incredible. now, it s not just buffalo that got hit hard, it s also watertown, jefferson county, impressive snowfall totals exceeding 65 inches in that particular area. so it s all about the wind, we ve been talking about that for several days now and it does look like we will see this westerly wind component continue for the coming hours through the day on sunday and that means we re going to focus that heaviest snow band south of buffalo and south of watertown and, in fact, some of that snow could impact portions of cleveland as well as erie. this is the snowfall focus, we re getting hyper local here, but you can see some of the highest snowfall totals, again, just outside of the areas that have been hit hardest lately. the broader perspective shows that amount of snowfall impacting western new york and into northeastern sections of ohio adds yet another pulse of energy moves through, this should be the last of the snow before we kind of wind things down in the day ....
