Santorum really is more like alabama voters and actually, i feel like he s more like i am. governor, we have to make a quick break because there is breaking election news. let s go to bret baier here in washington. reporter: the governor s right. alabama voters did picric rick. fox news can project that rick santorum will win alabama, leaving mitt romney and newt gingrich to battle for second place this. victory for santorum is a major boost for the campaign. he was once expected to finish third in alabama, a state in which he was vastly outspent by mitt romney. santorum s win is a major fwloa gingrich who predicted he would win alabama and mississippi. the former house speaker had been pinning his hopes for the nomination on a strong showing in the south after winning georgia last week and south carolina in january. now, this victory allows santorum to increase his calls for gingrich to drop out of the race, since the former speaker ....
people have already watched it. we want to welcome our viewers in the united states and around the world. i m wolf blitzer. you re in the situation room. rk vk captions by vitac www.vitac.com all that coming up, but now we get the latest on the kansas republican caucuses. i m don lemon at the cnn newsroom. kansas takes the spotlight in the republican race today. cnn is projecting that rick santorum has won the kansas caucuses. here s the totals here, check them out with nearly all the caucus votes counted, santorum won easily there. he has 51%. romney has a distant second at 21%. kansas is a conservative state with a strong evangelical vote, both playing to santorum s strengths. we bring in chief political correspondent candy crowley joining us live from washington. big picture here, romney and gingrich pretty much let santorum have kansas so his luck holds here. is this an important win? you know, i hate to sound like everybody else but the fact of the matt ....
Can t win alabama and mississippi, can t demonstrate he can win outside of his own home state, it s hard for him. how about rick santorum, how long can he hold on? i think he can hold on for quite a while now. everything charlie black says is true. romney had an overwhelmingly victorious night, delegate map is clear but rick santorum has an argument to make because he has a swath of the party, a significant swath of the party who s with him and with him a bit more passionately than mitt romney supporters are with him. and he is that fighter bite you played, that s an argument he still can make to a very open republican electorate to hearing that argument that gets excited about that argument. here s the problem. what the romney campaign needs to now demonstrate, they can make the math argument, no doubt about that. how do they straddle their mission here of re-establishing mitt romney as a viable candidate against barack obama with big general election audiences, women, independent ....
Nomination go longer. he decided not to do that because he thought, you know what? four years from now maybe i can be the nominee. that isn t there is no four years from now for newt gingrich. yep. and chris matthews, february s going to be mitt romney s month. yeah. and by the way, now would be a great time the day after you win florida to dump ten years of tax returns and deal with it because you know you re going to win throughout february. get it over with. but if you re gingrich in march and looking at that calendar and thinking i m going to win georgia, i m going to win alabama, i m going to win mississippi, i m going to win louisiana, i m going to win tennessee, i m going to win oklahoma, and i could win texas because i m the southern candidate, first of all, and secondly, if there is a mormon problem, there s a mormon problem in the deep south. i think there s no reason for newt to get out of the race. one of the reasons he ll stay in is to make sure romney ....
And i don t need nor want outside votes coming in or surrogates coming in because that is the antithesis and the nuance is that he needs a significant number of african-american voters to come out, specifically in birmingham and also in selma. so if anyone is going to be able to kind of turn up that base if you will, it is a john lewis, who by the way went to school at troy university in alabama. and marched in alabama. and possibly could be the deval patrick and it is a finite group of african-americans who could reinforce the need to come out and vote come tuesday. so if anyone could do it, it would be a john lewis or perhaps a duveval patrick. and then candidate obama, the numbers have gone down in the state as we look at the last race in terms of african-american turnout for a democrat candidate and then what will get the voters out? they are both saying it is about getting voters to the booth. turnout is what this ca ra ....
