At Durhamâs Garden Terrace Apartments in Lakewood, resident Maryeri Sarmiento is tired of being ignored. Her apartment is riddled with maintenance concerns, she told the INDY through a translator, and her requests for repairs regularly go unanswered. Wood is rotting under the kitchen sink, and mold is growing on air vents in the bathroom. While the $900 billion pandemic relief package provides funding for small businesses and unemployed workers, landlords say they could soon face foreclosure because they aren t getting enough help. The new year was supposed to bring an end to the nationwide moratorium on evictions during the coronavirus pandemic, but the relief package extends that moratorium to the end of January. Gov. Roy Cooper also signed an executive order last week blocking any eviction proceedings until at least February. “I have several owners who are very concerned and don’t know what they are going to do, said Beth Wilson Black, co-owner of Wilson Property Management in Raleigh, which manages 1,500 rental homes, condominiums and apartments in Wake, Durham and Johnston counties. ....
