(WECT) - On Friday, the North Carolina Forest Service announced the 83 recipients of the 2020 Tree City USA designation and the 12 college and university campuses that earned the Tree Campus Higher Education designation to recognize the communities committed to tree preservation. The recipients of the 2020 designation include Bald head Island, Oak Island, and Southport in Brunswick County, and the City of Wilmington in New Hanover County. ....
White oak The free trees are possible from Howard Penton’s donation in support of the Wilmington Tree Initiative. The initiative aims to grow the urban forest in the city by planting 1,739 trees. With support from the city, New Hanover County, Alliance for Cape Fear Trees and Cape Fear Community College, the initiative has planted 1,718 trees. It has given away 1,615 trees. (WECT) - Just over 50 trees were planted by 40 volunteers from the Alliance for Cape Fear Trees Friday, January 29 as part of the Wilmington Tree Initiative to replace trees lost to hurricanes. These trees, planted along Racine Drive, from Old Eastwood Road to Oriole Drive, were planted in partnership with Audi Cape Fear. For every car sold since November 2020, Audi pledged to plant a tree. Many local groups are committed to re-growing Wilmingtonâs urban forest and the goal is to plant 1739 trees by fall 2021. So far, they have planted 1600. ....
