URI s Tracy Santos selected Student Veteran of the Year finalist – URI News

The first day Tracy Santos stepped onto the University of Rhode Island’s campus was the first day of classes, September 2021. Originally from the Bronx, N.Y., she joined the Marine Corps in 2013 at age 17, where she served as a member of a light-attack helicopter squadron, eventually achieving the rank of sergeant. Now, close to 10 years later, Santos ‘24 is president of URI’s Student Veterans Organization and has been named one of 10 student veteran of the year finalists by Student Veterans of America. .

University Of Rhode Island: URI s 135th Commencement: By The Numbers

May 13, 2021 The University of Rhode Island will confer 4,438 degrees (689 graduate and 3,749 undergraduate) academic degrees upon 4,093 students at the University s commencement ceremonies during the weekend of May 21 through 23. The number of degrees conferred is greater than the number of graduates because many students earn more than one degree. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, there will not be a large undergraduate commencement on the quadrangle or a large graduate commencement at the Ryan Center. Doctor who uncovered Flint water crisis to deliver keynote address KINGSTON — The University of Rhode Island has chosen Mona Hanna-Attisha, the Michigan doctor responsible for uncovering the Flint water crisis, to deliver the keynote address at this year’s commencement.  She will also receive an honorary doctorate degree in recognition of her courage for exposing the public health crisis that occurred when the city — in a cost-saving move — switched its water supply from the Detroit system to the Flint River. The switch, which was made in 2014, resulted in toxic lead contamination and coinciding outbreaks of Legionnaires’ disease. According to President David M. Dooley, her remarks and the bestowing of an honorary degree upon her “could not come at a more important time.”
