Theres the most recent book by peter snow which is when britain burned the white house. All of these books are great but the question or maybe the point that im trying to make is that to the average person when they read a title like that, its going to give them an impression that is not necessarily what really happened in washington, d. C. And i find it ironic that we have three books that talk about the white house, a very important public building, no question about it, where the president lived and it hurt the morale when you burn the president s house. No question about it. But to me, of all of the buildings that were burnt, the most significant was the Capitol Building. Thats where the seat of government existed. And none of these books have that in their title. Just interesting to me. And just so that you know they are all in good company, this is the title of a chapter in one of my books. Washington is burning. We all do ....

Government buildings at york, canada. Perhaps only one government building and perhaps not the American Army after all. This provided the burning of the public buildings provided opponents of the location with an opportunity to argue for removal without having to did he mean the city. During the month prior to convening of congress in late september 1814, residents expressed fears that the opponents of the city might prevail. Washington socialite eliz a, granddaughter of washington, went so far as to accuse secretary of war john armstrong, jr. , of allowing the british to capture the city in order to give ammunition to those who wished to move from the potomac and win himself Political Support in what might have been upcoming campaign. Baltimore, charleston, South Carolina, and a dozen other places are going to vote federal funds to build wharfs and other facilities in alexandria. So that money is not available. Alexandria begins to decline. As a transatlantic commercial center. Fortunately its going to become a railroad center, et cetera. Those petitions to retrocede the town or actually all of the district on the virginia side of the river, those pegs started very early. They were never effective until George Washington park tried to give up protecting the dream of his grandfather for 100 square miles. When he signed in 1846, bingo, the legislation flew through congress. In his first, i think, speech to congress, address to congress, president clinton called on congress to take back those 37 square miles and reincorporate them into the district. Obviously it didnt happen. Yes . Not mention s word, slav ....

Country, that thats more than just a raid, that its a significant moment in International History and so i severely disagree with my canadian counterparts that what happened here was a very important moment in both british and American History. Ive even had canadians say they got the white house. Lets do this. So thats the last question and want to give everyone 30 seconds to close up and geez. So sum up the war of 1812 in 30 seconds and i dont want the audience to forget they will be around, there will be book signings. You dont want to miss that opportunity. Doctor, please start us off. 30 seconds. I did an analysis of raids, skirmishes and battles of war of the 1812. Province of ontario and state of maryland tied on the numbers and virginia came in third. I find that very interesting. So the chesapeake theater had more raids, skirmishes and battles than any other ....
