program, katrina quinn, who, along with all these panelists, is working on a book called the soldier in the civil war press. ms. quinn: thank you, dr. sachsman. i am excited to be here this morning with my colleagues to talk about how the civil war press commemorated the civil war soldier. harris casey, from frog hail, alabama left his family farm to in the fall of 1861 to fight for the confederacy. his unit was known as the cherokee rangers, and they would see action in major engagements such as murphreesboro. like 95,000 other soldiers of the confederacy and 110,000 soldiers of the union, harris met his fate on the battlefield. but unlike many soldiers cut down in battle, somehow harris was brought back to his family home, and this is where he is buried, on his family s land, the very place he ran and played as a child. 700 miles away, jonathan colegrove, from the banks of potato creek in pennsylvania, also left his family farm in the fall of 1861. his unit, the pennsylva
