THE bridge crossing the Vyrnwy river near Llanymynech has served the region for nearly 200 years. Yet it has a tragic past with one person dying during its construction while another died 15 years after it was opened. The story begins in 1826 when a special Act of Parliament ruled a bridge should be built between Llandysilio and Llanymynech owing to the dangerous state of the fords and the threat of flooding. It was also considered a necessary undertaking to link Shropshire with the wilds of Montgomeryshire. The Justices of the Peace of the Counties of Salop, Denbigh, and Montgomeryshire raises £ 8,000, and the Trustees of the Roads a further sum of £ 2,700 towards the cost of the works.
