phil graduated from wheeling jazz with university and is a graduate degree from george mason university. he is currently a supervisory park ranger with the national park service in florida, so with that, let us learn a little bit about why someone would want to burn down boston. [laughter] [applause] i m a park ranger in the everglades so i did not bring any snakes, so everyone in the first or second row i know that was a big concern, but today s talk is centered on summit farther north and being a baltimore orioles fan, there are reasons why want to see boston burn. [laughter] today is the road to , at theon and boston center of that early colonial british comeo the into existence. i figured i would summit up in three days. thanks for coming, we will take questions. we often hear the word, but do you know what nicotine is? i don t really know exactly what it is, but i know you re not supposed to, like, have it and just can really damage your body. nicotine is what gets you addicted to cigarettes. well, nicotine is a drug. it s a stimulant. it acts on your central nervous system. like heroin or cocaine, nicotine changes the way your brain works. it causes the body to want more and more as you continue to use nicotine. this means nicotine is addictive. but as dr. carroll points out, it s even more addictive if you re a teen. teenagers have a developing brain, and during that developmental period, you are much more likely to get addicted to things like nicotine. to understand what being addicted to nicotine means, you need to understand what happens when your body stops getting nicotine. so when people quit smoking they will often experience what we call nicotine withdrawal. that is that, you know, they re used to having nicot

good evening. i am the executive director of the society of the cincinnati. it is my pleasure to introduce our speaker this evening. i want you all to do me a favor. this is his book. he s going to talk to us about it. the book is the road to concord: how four stolen cannon ignited the revolutionary war. he will defend that premise for us a little bit later. i want to tell you what my reaction to this book is because i have had the opportunity to read it already. it is one of three books in the last 20 years i read cover to cover in one sitting. i don t read quickly. the reason i read it cover to cover in one sitting is it is extremely well written. it is graceful prose of an old-fashioned sort. and second, it is wonderfully researched, when i was taught in graduate school to refer to as a revisionist work in history. all good works of history if they are good are revisionist in some way, but he is telling us a new story about the coming of the revolution in massachusetts
tonight we are delighted to have derek beck presented the war before independence 1775. derek has always had a passion for military history which inspired him to start his career in the u.s. air force, he has served as an officer on active duty and science roles and in space operations. in 2005 he earned a master of science degree at m.i.t. where he also fell in love with boston s revolutionary past. to more fully pursue writing, he later transitioned to the air force reserves, though he still remains quite active, presently holding the rank of major. derek s first book igniting the american revolution, 1773 to 1775 received an honorable mention here at the fraunces tavern museum book award in april. derek s second book, the sequel, the war before independence and that was released in may. i would now like to welcome derek to the lectern.
