Hes been a reporter for the observer, the wall street journal, managing editor, executive editor and editor in chief of congressional quart ley and more recently, the american conservative. The american conservative, he says its collaborative, but it sounds like robert merry. This is a description of their philosophy. We believe in constitutional government, fiscal prudence, sound monetary policy, clearly delineated borders, authentically free markets and Foreign Policy mixed with diplomatic acuity. We adhere closely to institutional max um, principles over party. One could wish there were more of that kind of true

So i knew of course that taft succeeded teddy and they would run against each other 1912, but then you always go back and i know scott does too, you want the primary sources, the letters and diaries and private journals for historians so when i found the 400 letters between the two, i realized they become friends when they were in their early 30s and an odd couple, teddy who is marching around everywhere doing wrestling and boxing and taft wayne between 250 and 350 is not doing much wrestling and boxing at that point, but they liked each other and the opposites almost attracted and teddy brings them into his cabinet, he becomes the most important person in his cabinet even though all his life he wanted to be a judge, never a politician, from from that he decides hes the man i want to succeed me, he runs the taft campaign, gives him advice at every moment, the only thing he did not give him a vice was the Campaign Song which i dont think teddy wouldve approved of it was get on a raft wi
Where is he . What are you doing in the back . For anyone who has not heard of john milton hooper, shame on you. He wrote an awardwinning biography of Woodrow Wilson, and he has been enormously hopeful to us over the years, appearing many times, but also helping us unpack some of the difficult issues around Woodrow Wilson. The subject of todays conversation. So, in 1978, when the Wilson Center was 10 years old, we were charged by congress with creating a Hubert Humphrey fellowship in social and political thought. Good idea. The idea was that a quote, distinguished scholar, statesman, or cultural figure would deliver a lecture honoring humphreys legacy, which makes sense since he was a founding father of this place, as well as Vice President , senator, and dedicated public servant. And at times like this, when the mood in washington is so grim, he was always optimistic. Something i remember and cherish. Its taken us a few years, but we are very proud today to host the Hubert H Humphrey
Showing the role radio played shaping american view and Foreign Policy. All right. So last week we talked about coming to the war in europe and coming to the war in asia, so what id like to talk about today is the american reaction to all of that. Lets call that the american debate over american involvement in world war ii. This is the most important debate in all of american history, and Public Opinion probably more than any previous debate mattered here in part because for the first time it was a way of gauging Public Opinion. The gallop poll organization had begun regularly polling the American People. And so leaders had a much better sense, a much more direct sense what the people actually thought. So youre going to see a lot of polling data in this, in fleshing out exactly what americans thought. So well focus quite a bit on Public Opinion and talk about actual policy as a reflection of that Public Opinion. At the start of the war in europe my argument is that there were two basic
