Candidate Profile: Bill Rossello runs for council | Alexandria Times

City Council candidate Bill Rossello literally has widespread involvement in the Alexandria community.
A Baltimore native of Puerto Rican descent, Rossello moved to Alexandria in 1988 and married his wife, Bonnie, a year later. During his more than three decades in the city, Rossello has lived in three of Alexandria’s distinct neighborhoods – Old Town, North Ridge and Seminary Hill.
According to Rossello, his long-standing connection to the city and its residents distinguishes him from most of the other candidates running for council in the June 8 Democratic primary.
“The rest of the folks are relatively, you know, they haven’t lived here very long, they haven’t seen a lot, they don’t really understand, in my mind, the full context of where we’ve been as a city,” Rossello said. ....

Council reverses on Braddock West | Alexandria Times

City Council voted to rescind its previous denial of a special use permit for a 180-unit multi-use apartment building during Tuesday’s legislative meeting.
Council voted 4-3 during the March 13 public hearing to deny a permit from developer West Street Acquisitions, LLC to build the project across from the Braddock Road Metro station. As initially proposed, the project would include 180 units of housing – 14 of which would be affordable – as well as space for retail, restaurants and other shopping uses.
The project was originally approved 6-1 by the Planning Commission in December, but during the March hearing, several members of council expressed concerns around the project’s potential impact on the city’s stormwater system and a relative lack of affordable housing. ....

Collective bargaining approved | Alexandria Times

City Council unanimously passed a historic collective bargaining ordinance at a public hearing on Saturday.
The newly passed ordinance will mark the first time the city will grant its public sector employees the legal right to collectively bargain. Collective bargaining, which is the legal process by which employees negotiate wages, benefits and working conditions with their employers, has long been outlawed for government workers in the city and the state.
Under the new ordinance, city employees will be allowed to enter into binding legal negotiations with the city over wages and benefits as well as other conditions of their employment, including procedures for resolving grievances, provisions for workplace safety and scheduling. ....

Historic Garden Week Tour returns | Alexandria Times

For more than 90 years, Virginians have been opening their homes and gardens to the public for a week in the spring. From April 17 to 24, garden clubs across Virginia will be providing specialty programming for visitors at historic homes and gardens in an event known as Historic Garden Week.
In Alexandria, this year’s tour, which takes place on April 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will be different because of COVID-19. The event will consist only of exteriors. Participants will be given maps and directions for a self-guided walking circuit of more than a dozen homes. Called “A Spring–time Stroll: Doorways of Our Past and Future,” the tour features a variety of floral arrangements and outdoor installations along the route. ....
