When Belgium face Italy in the quarter-finals of the European Championship on Friday evening, Divock Origi will be watching on from Mykonos rather than the subs’ bench in Munich.
The Liverpool striker, who is training on the Greek island under the tutelage of Manchester-based performance coach Nicky Holender, was left out of Roberto Martinez’s tournament plans this summer following a lack of game time last season at club level. Origi appeared only 17 times for Liverpool across the whole campaign and made just two Premier League starts.
Seven years ago, life at international level was looking a lot perkier for Origi than it is today. The then 19-year-old announced himself on the global stage with his energetic performances at the 2014 World Cup culminating in him starting Belgium’s 1-0 quarter-final loss to eventual runners-up Argentina. ....

European Super League: why punishing the breakaway 12 could backfire badly


The football world has been rocked by the announcement of a breakaway European Super League (ESL). The majority think it a bad idea, from governing bodies Fifa and Uefa through to national bodies such as the FA and English Premier League.
The same goes for the fan groups at the six English clubs that comprise half of the ESL’s initial membership of 12: Liverpool, Man City, Man Utd, Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal from England. The remaining founders are Barcelona, Real Madrid and Athletico Madrid from Spain; and Juventus, AC Milan and Inter from Italy. The top German and French clubs are not participating. ....
