A Phoenix 911 operator who was put on life support last week after working a mandatory 16-hour shift had died, family members said.
The death of Pamela Cooper, a 21-year-veteran with Phoenix 911, was confirmed by her husband of seven years, Joel, in a Facebook post on Friday.
The inevitable has finally come, Joel said. My beautiful wife.passed away today at 1:13. That s all I can say for now. We will post more as we can. Thank you for all of your support through this tragic time. ....

PHOENIX A Phoenix 911 dispatcher’s dire situation is raising a lot of questions about her workplace.  
Pamela Cooper, a 21-year-veteran with Phoenix 911, is now on life support after her family says she was pressured into working overtime. She went back to work last after battling COVID-19 and lingering symptoms earlier this year. 
She started to feel sick Friday and when her family says she asked to leave, she was mandated to work six extra hours on top of her normal 10-hour shift. ....

The Mando Mart to which Cooper s supervisor refers is a collection of snacks put together by supervisors for when they mandate that employees stay past the end of their typical 10-hour shift. A regular occurrence in the understaffed dispatch center, a mandate is why Cooper, an asthmatic still recovering from six weeks of fighting the aftereffects of COVID-19, was required to work for more than 15 hours in late February, her first week back from sick leave. The 20-year 911 veteran told her mother that she feared discipline if she didn t comply. ....

Phoenix 911 Dispatcher Hospitalized After Mandatory 15-Hour Shift


The previous night, Ryan s daughter Pamela Cooper, 49, had worked a shift of more than 15 hours at Phoenix s 911 dispatch center. Cooper was a 20-year veteran of the dispatch center, but it was her first week back after six weeks recovering from COVID-19. She was still feeling unwell but was out of paid leave and supporting both her mother, a widow on social security, and her husband, whose unemployment has run out.
“She said, I got to work to pay the bills, Ryan remembers.

The first few days were difficult, but on Friday, February 26, Cooper really started to go downhill. ....
