Pennsylvania saw about twice the normal number of wildfires in 2020, but a bit less than the norm in acres burned, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
While there were 1,508 wildfire last year – the 10-year average is 750 – they burned 3,021 acres – the 10-year average is 3,500 acres, DCNR noted in the annual report for the Wildland Fire Program.
“Pennsylvania’s 2020 wildfire season started off early, with a large number of fires in February,” read the report. “As the spring season progressed, weather conditions changed and numbers dropped.
