A local nonprofit, which was created in an effort to maintain the positive legacy of a former Millville resident killed during a random act of gun violence, seeks support in its intent to create a community center.
Our Future First, a 501 © (3) organization committed to building a better community, is attempting to raise $30,000 so it can purchase a building in Millville with the hopes of turning it into a youth and young adult-oriented community center.
If it succeeds in its mission, Our Future First is naming the building Reese’s House, in honor of Maurice Lewis, who, on May 18, 2018, was shot in the head, while sitting at a traffic stop in Millville. The 19-year-old passed away two days later.
MILLVILLE – When a random act of gunfire claimed the life of Maurice “Reese” Lewis, his friends and family pledged that the teen’s compassion would be his legacy.
“We all realized that something needed to change,” said Stephanie Risley, 21, of Millville, a longtime friend of Lewis. “For someone so innocent, who wasn’t involved in anything bad, who never hurt a fly, for something like that to happen, we were all just shocked.”
“We don’t want to lose anyone else the same way we lost Reese or have anyone else go through what we went through,” Risley said.
They channeled their anguish into action launching the nonprofit “Our Future First” and focused on opening a youth center for middle school and high school teens who they see as overlooked and underserved.
