High winds leave concerns about human-caused wildfires in Salt Lake City


The National Weather Service s Salt Lake City office issued a red flag warning Monday morning for much of southern Utah, in effect from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. today, April 19. Strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures could contribute to extreme fire behavior, according to the release, which cautions residents against engaging in any type of outdoor burning at this time.
Winds throughout southern Utah today are expected to come from the west at between 20 and 30 miles per hour with gusts up to 45 miles per hour. This weather can easily pick up embers from campfires and controlled home burns and blow them into dry landscapes that, in drought conditions and at just 8% humidity, are primed to ignite. These fires can then quickly spread out of control and cause damage to the environment and personal property. Those found liable for starting wildfires can be held financially responsible for these losses. ....

Fire and smoke erupted late Sunday over the Veyo Volcano north of Dammeron Valley after a wildfire started along the nearby state Route 18 highway. The blaze headed south and west toward Sand Cove Reservoir.
