Prairie Land Conservancy lends a hand at Rezab Family Prairie Meadow Kate Van Sloten Prairie Land Conservancy MACOMB People driving down Wigwam Hollow Road the last week of December might have noticed the Rezab Family Prairie Meadow was on fire. Prairie Land Conservancy staff members Eric Little and Kate Van Sloten, along with PLC board members Tim Howe and Chris Enroth, and volunteer Max Nash-Howe conducted a controlled burn to help benefit the prairie. Prairie Land Conservancy is an accredited land trust located in Macomb, Ill. that protects over 2,000 acres of land including woodlands, wetlands, and restored prairie. Their team conducts regular prairie burns on their properties and conservation easements. ....

The organization is also doing local fundraising and seeking grants to help pay for the work, which Program Coordinator Kate Van Sloten said could cost $70,000- $100,000. “We don’t have a ton of funds raised to do the invasive species removal. To date, we’ve raised about $11,400 just this year and we hope to continue to raise funds,” she said. “We’ve been looking for grants and other assistance to help with this project.” Van Sloten said the project is called the “Bring Birds Back” campaign. The site is not open to the public right now. But Van Sloten said PLC plans to eventually create hiking trails and open up the land. ....
