I’d like to see my mom stroll the aisles at the A&P just one more time, checking the prices marked in grease pencil on canned and packaged goods. Better still, I’d like to be the boy of six or seven who tagged along now and then.
I usually trailed silently, wishing for this or that on candy shelves. I say silently because any hint of a whiny “I want this” outburst would draw a glare from the woman in the navy blue dress hovering above.
Public pouting was unseemly. Such nonsense would be dealt with when Dad got home. He wasn’t a tyrant but his three kids knew the impact of his word. He was not to be tested. ....
