Briana Zegler: ‘Everyone was so willing to help me succeed.’
An encounter with an EMU Admissions representative during a campus tour was all Briana Zegler needed to know she’d picked the right university.
“The representative pulled me and my dad aside from the tour group to review what scholarships I’d receive and to discuss what my program would be like,” says Zegler, who is from Schaumburg, Illinois, and is in EMU s 150-hour Accounting program [BBA + MS]. “The staff and faculty I met were already so willing to help me succeed in college, I knew Eastern was home.”

Reem Yassine 'There were so many opportunities to become involved.'

Reem Yassine: ‘There were so many opportunities to become involved.’
Reem Yassine, a 2019 biology graduate who is now a medical student at Michigan State College of Osteopathic Medicine, says she chose to attend Eastern because of the many opportunities to become involved on campus.
“The Honors College, Department of Diversity & Community Involvement, and the Biology department are examples of communities I joined,” she says. “I also really appreciated Eastern’s small class sizes.”
Yassine also became engaged in social justice issues through Eastern’s Alternative Break program.
“The program centers on a week-long trip to a community that’s struggling with an issue like poverty, housing insecurity or homelessness,” she says. “We learn about the issue in advance and perform community service. The experience has opened my eyes to the social issues that plague my own community and have motivated me to become a more active citizen.” ....

For Black travelers, safety and cultural acceptance are often top of the list when choosing a destination. But Black traveler doesn t represent a monolithic group: our individuality impacts the way each of us moves through the world. As a Black Muslim woman, mother, and expat, my needs look very different from those of a Black LGBTQ person on vacation. I often consider whether or not my hijab (headscarf) is lawfulin a given destination. Will I be able to find somewhere to pray? How are darker-skinned people treated? What about Muslims?
When my family was planning a move to Asia a few years ago, a Facebook group for Black Americans, Brothas & Sistas of China, proved invaluable in answering these questions, and many more. Most Black American expats in the country opt for cities with bigger international populations, such as Beijing, Shanghai, or Shenzhen. But we were landing in Chongqing a city my husband and I had never even heard of thanks to his new job there as a coach ....
