“Warning for women in British Columbia. Recently up to five women have all gone missing. … You need to travel in pairs and carry self defence weapons. This man is targeting single women,” reads an alarming statement spread widely on Facebook in recent days.
It was just one version of a string of similar messages on Facebook, TikTok and Twitter that Mounties tried to halt this weekend, categorizing them as unproven rumours that were scaring people.
