still chief among the questions out there and why is the police department now backtracking on some of their basic findings? officials are going to be holding a briefing in texas in the next hour. let s begin though at this hour with cnn s rosa flores live in uvalde. rosa, what are you hearing from some of these children who managed to survive? reporter: well, kate, we are hearing about those intense moments when the shooter was inside the classroom, those intense moments when children were trying to do everything they could to survive. they describe the gunfire at first. they thought it was fireworks. you mentioned a little girl who covered herself in blood and played dead to try to survive, to make sure that she could do what she could do at that point in time to survive this terrible tragedy. but here they are, children describing what they lived through in their own words. take a listen. it was very terrifying. that didn t stop one of my friends getting hurt. ....
In uvalde, texas, we are now starting to hear from the young survivors of the massacre at robb elementary school. they are sharing truly horrible stories of watching friends, watching their teachers die in front of them. some of these little children are also now asking why didn t the grown-ups, why didn t police get in there sooner to save them. cnn producer nora neus joins me from uvalde with one of their stories. nora, you spoke with one of these fourth graders who lived through this and her story is terrifying. and first and foremost there was a reason that little mia wanted to speak with you. can you talk to us about that? reporter: yeah, so normally i m john berman s producer and normally john would do these interviews. he was scheduled to interview mia and she is so traumatized by ....

Hello, everyone. i m kate bolduan. we are hearing now excruciating accounts directly from the children who survived the mass murder in uvalde, texas. the brave students are sharing harrowing accounts of what unfolded inside their classrooms where 12 of their classmates, sorry, 19 of their classmates and two teachers were murdered. one of those survivors, an 11-year-old girl, she is now talking to cnn laying out the horrific lengths that she had to go to to try and protect herself in the middle of all of this. rubbing her friend s blood on herself to play dead. we re going to bring you her account. her story and why she feels strongly about speaking out right now. we ll bring that to you very soon. on the investigation, police have still not provided adequate answers about their response to the massacre or even a clear time line really of what happened. why did it take an hour to kill the gunman? ....
Individual that s armed the way these individuals are from coming in and shooting our children and our teachers. well, let me ask you. our teachers are afraid. of course they are. dan, one thing we know as of now from the police there is they now say there was no school resource officer available is how they describe it. despite earlier saying that there was. that leads to the question would it have made a difference? do you think armed school resource officers are effective in protecting students from something like this? i don t believe even in this case, had that been the case, that a resource officer with a gun would have been able to stand up to an individual with an assault rifle. i mean, as far as i heard, there was a shootout basically between police and this individual as he was entering the school. and he even shot a couple of police officers in the process. so the problem here from our perspective, and this is something we ve been advocating ....
