NEW YORK    It is no secret that rapid digitisation is upending firms’ operations, systems, and entire business models. Whether companies can both manage the risks and also reap the massive rewards that digital technologies can deliver depends significantly on the actions they take in five key areas.
First, digitisation should enable managers to allocate the company’s capital and labour better, in real time. Efficient companies regularly review and upgrade their operations in at least three ways: streamlining existing processes, adopting best practices from outside their organisations and identifying the most productive use of their assets. First, digitisation should enable managers to allocate the company’s capital and labour better – in real time. Efficient companies regularly review and upgrade their operations in at least three ways: streamlining existing processes, adopting best practices from outside their organisations and identifying the most productive use of their assets. Digital technology can enhance all of these activities.
Movie theatre companies, for example, already deploy human capital based on real-time demand trends: in the US, information about ticket sales and social media reviews following releases on the East Coast will shape staffing decisions on the West Coast. Similar approaches can be implemented (or enhanced) in a wide range of sectors, boosting efficiency and productivity. The benefits will grow progressively, as companies adjust their hiring practices to target candidates with the relevant expertise. ....

Kevin J Worthen began serving as the 13th president of Brigham Young University on May 1, 2014. He previously served as BYU s advancement vice president and as the dean of its J. Reuben Clark Law School, where he was the Hugh W. Colton Professor of Law. President Worthen currently serves as an area seventy in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. President and Sister Worthen have three children and six grandchildren.
President Worthen was born in Dragerton (now East Carbon-Sunnyside), Utah, and grew up in nearby Price. After serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Monterrey, Mexico, he earned an associate degree from the College of Eastern Utah (now USU Eastern). He then received his Bachelor of Arts in political science and his Juris Doctor from BYU. Following his graduation from the J. Reuben Clark Law School, President Worthen served as a law cl ....
