thank you so much for being with us on this busy day of news. the beat with ari melber starts right now. thank you so much. welcome to the beat. we are tracking this breaking news as republicans suffer the first open speaker revolt in a century. kevin mccarthy started the new congress a humiliating failure. he lost the vote for speaker today. lost 19 republicans on the first ballot. it s the first time any politician in any party lost a hope floor vote for speaker since 1923. it s rare because of course this is a job where the votes are typically lined up. person who is becoming speaker is above all else supposed to get, count, and keep votes. in the orderly process of this first day of the new house, here s what it sounded like on the floor. the honorable hakeem jeff his of the state of new york has received 212. the honorable kevin mccarthy of the state of california has received 202. no person having received the majority of the whole number of votes cast by surnam
that s right. i m going to be watching. i would hazard a guess that we have not heard anybody be nominated who s going to be speaker next. people are talk about jim jordan. these conservatives know that jim jordan does not have a prayer of becoming republican speaker of the conference. because of his standing within the caucus, yeah. he s basically a strawman. conservatives are trying to show mccarthy can t get the gavel. i don t know when it is, tonight, tomorrow, next week, next month. eventually the conference is going to have a conversation and say, look, he s not going to get there. we re going to have to turn somewhere else. i have been sort of watching steve scalise, who sccarthy s number two. a lot of people have said privately, some members have said, steve, you have to be ready. the question is when will that happen, and you know, how ugly are things going to have to get before they get there. and again, it speaks to the kind of intellectual humility we
