The Biden administration has transitioned to official government Twitter accounts â minus the followers

President Biden and Vice President Harris have been sworn into office â and also taken over the official government Twitter accounts.
But Biden and Harris wonât be taking the main government accountsâ followers with them. Theyâve had to start from scratch with their own transition accounts.
Twitter has transfered the tweets, followers, and account history of @PresElectBiden, the account Biden has used since he was elected, to @POTUS. Bidenâs account has just under 1 million followers with 938,800 as of Tuesday afternoon, while the official government account has more than 33 million.
President-elect Joe Biden’s digital team has taken issue with Twitter s decision to block Biden from inheriting President Trump’s followers on the platform – a practice at odds with previous presidential transitions. In 2016, the Trump admin absorbed all of President Obama s Twitter followers on @POTUS and @WhiteHouse at Team 44 s urging, Biden Digital Director Rob Flaherty said on Twitter Tuesday. In 2020, Twitter has informed us that as of right now the Biden administration will have to start from zero.
Flaherty later said the Biden team was told the move was unequivocal when they pushed back against the Twitter policy.

The social network will not transfer the 33.2 million subscribers to @POTUS ( President Of The United States ) after Joe Biden s inauguration on January 20, 2021, noted Rob Flaherty, Joe Biden s digital manager, on his Twitter account. Joe Biden has 21.7 million subscribers on his personal account.
