'Complete carnage' - traffic problems near Campus Whitehaven


Traffic problems on a busy school road have been described as “absolute hell” and “complete carnage” by two leading councillors.
Mayor of Whitehaven, Brian O’Kane and councillor Carl Walmsley are among those to voice concerns over the amount of traffic in the Red Lonning area, near Campus Whitehaven, which houses St Benedict’s Catholic High School and Mayfield School.
The road is gridlocked during peak times and Coun Walmsley fears there will soon be a serious accident.
Coun O’Kane says the situation is also a “complete nightmare” for residents living on the nearby estates.
He said: “It’s absolute hell. It’s an ongoing problem. ....

Concerns raised over danger caused by discarded masks across Whitehaven


Throughout Whitehaven, councillors and residents alike have spotted used face masks being left on the ground.
And with Covid continuing to take hundreds of lives across the country, Councillor Carl Walmsley is urging people to be more considerate to others within the town, as well as the environment.
As well as causing a mess, people’s actions could also increase the spread of the virus, he said.
On top of this, discarded masks could also cause damage to the environment and wildlife, as animals can get stuck in the straps that hold the masks together.
Coun Walmsley, who represents Whitehaven South ward on Copeland Council, continued: I m asking residents to dispose of masks and face covers doubled up in plastic bags, put them in public bins or better still take them home to put in their own bin. They should then wash their hands or use a sanitiser immediately afterwards. ....
