Cars. those cars have been towed, so they can actually clear the george washington parkway, which is one of the hardest hit areas. and imagine once you got home after that horrible commute, now you ve got no power. so about 350,000 people in and around the district have no power. and it s going to be a few days before things get back up and normal here pip mean, you ve got companies that are having to be coming in. we ll have to call in the cavalry, essentially, to get this taken care of. and that s what some of the three main power companies are going to do. it s going to take a while, but i ll tell you, even though it wasn t as big as some of last year s storms in the district, this was a hard hitter because of the time that it fell and the fact that it had so much water content. i mean, seriously, white mud is about the best description i can give it. all right. want to point out, though, we put up another shot, jim, of newark airport. it s up and running now, at least we see some ....
How s it looking there? reporter: we ve got the sun. temperatures have warmed up to about 38 degrees. it s actually dry here. this is probably one of the few dry spots in the nation s capital, as we head really what was 2 inches of water, but only about 5 inches of snow. which is a phenomenal snow-to-water ratio. which was why it was almost like white mud coming down from the sky. sorry about that, guys. but the snow is melting on the roads. there are still many side streets that are very much snow covered. and all this coming last night with the rush hour, pretty much creating gridlock. timing is everything, thomas. the snow starts coming down. we ve got thunder, we ve got sleet, then the thundersnow comes in and people are on the roads trying to get out of the way before it comes in and they find themselves pretty much in gridlock. think about this. can you imagine being in your car for 12 hours? people were trying to go 30, 40 miles and some people getting home from d.c. at 4:00 t ....
Get the roads back in shape. jim cantore joins us from revers. jim, what s the latest? they ve done just a tremendous job since 2:00 a.m. you can t stand here really more than five minutes and not see a plow go by. you see the roads behind me just looking fantastic. they ve scraped, they ve salted and they ve exercised their snow removal budget. i ll tell you that right now. what s been interesting is as soon as the snow tapered off, we ve seen the city come out here. they ve cleared a couple of the sidewalk areas, which is great. people can come here to work tomorrow. the president of the city council said we may actually have school tomorrow in revers. they re considering having school here. this stuff is so heavy. it s like white mud. you can imagine what it s like for a plow or a small truck to try and move this. so they ve just had an armada of snow removal equipment to clean this up. now the snow has tapered off. the problems remain, especially ....
40-mile-an-hour winds are causing whiteout conditions. you re right in the middle of it there, my friend. yeah, richard. this is bad because it s such a heavy, wet snow. it s like white mud coming down. we re watching this payloader, which is starting to clear the sidewalks. look at the roads. this is amazing the job they ve done here in the city of revers, just keeping these roads cleared. we get this burst of snow, which comes down and covers them and they come right back through and scrape them. we ve been watching this. the job of this, clearing city hall nicely here. the city has been up and running the whole time. i talked to the city council president. he said, jim, we re actually thinking about having school tomorrow, believe it or not. there s been 10, 20, and 30 inches. now the job is to remove it. it s a very heavy, wet snow. as a result of that, it is weighting down trees and power lines. if you look at the tree behind me, even the trunk of the tree is flocked with snow. ....
