Man accused of removing door handles in Ontario retirement home units charged with unlawful confinement

Police say the complaint alleged that during the pandemic staff had removed some of the door handles.
Tawab Karimi, 40, of Oshawa, has been charged with two counts of unlawful confinement.
He was released on an undertaking.
The retirement home’s operator said in February that it launched an investigation into a senior staff member at the facility.
A statement from Verve Senior Living said door handles removed from “a small number” of suites belonged to assisted living residents.
The statement did not specify why the handles were removed, but several media reports allege the residents involved had tested positive for COVID-19. The Canadian Press could not independently verify the allegation. ....

“It was alleged that during the COVID-19 Pandemic, staff members had removed door handles to some units in the residence,” Sgt. George Tudos said in a statement released Wednesday.
He said investigators “worked with community partners and oversight bodies” and arrested a man who was the general manager at the time. ....

An Oshawa man has been charged after reports surfaced earlier this year that door handles were removed from some rooms in a retirement home to prevent COVID-19 positive residents from freely moving around the facility.
As CityNews first reported back in February, an anonymous whistleblower came forward with information that a manager at the White Cliffe Terrace Retirement Residence in Courtice ordered maintenance staff to remove door handles on some fourth-floor assisted living suites. ....
