one of the nation s best-known landmarks, the washington monument, will now be closed until at least 2014. believe it or not, it is all because of the damage from last summer s major earthquake. as wjla s jennifer donnilen reports it is a repair job. reporter: the freak earthquake last august may not have brought the monument crumbling down but the top whiplashed and cracked. so came the news, the monument could remain closed until 2014. i did know about the earthquake. but i expected that it would be ready and working this summer. so i was surprised. reporter: surprised because almost a year since the quake, they could only take pictures. the national park service put out a timetable for repairs, the construction bids are under way. once a contract is awarded sometime in september it may take 12 to 18 months to fix the cracks. the ultimate challenge in fixing the washington monument is the height of the damage. reporter: getting skilled
