This was nothing more than a power grab in order to try to advance the obama administration s regulatory agenda. and they just broke the senate rules. that was senate minority leader mitch mcconnell thursday after senate democrats invoked the so-called nuclear option to rein in filibusters. we re back with our brain trust. dana, let me start with you. you wrote in your column about the consequences of a rules change saying, if congress wasn t broken before, it certainly is now. what reid and his fellow democrats effectively did was take the chamber of congress that still functioned at a modest level and turn it into a clone of the other chamber, which functions not at all. they turned the senate into the house. that said, how much damage can this really do? well, we don t know. and that s the problem. i think the democrats are completely justified in doing it. the republicans have been abusing the powers of the minority, not to shape legislation to their liking but to prevent this ....
You know, he s so frustrated, nothing is happening. the truth of the matter is our country is hurting today. people are outraged that even on a simple thing, i don t know that john has particular options to these three nominations to this court. that s just one small part of the problem. virtually sever initiative that comes up look, a few weeks ago we were dealing with our republican friends in the house who shut it down, because they had the bright idea that they wanted to end the funding of obama care. they went too far. you re seeing the same practice taking place in the senate. what reid has done is respond to that, trying to bring back a level of functionality in the senate. senator, if you would respond to this, we re working on the defense authorization bill right now. right. that s always been an opened-amendment process, but instead leader reid has a closed process. we can t even offer an amendment. how in any way, shape or form are you going to get a ....
A bad word. i say profit is a bad word. are the republicans in the congress, everybody else, they want to pay more. one s a comic. the other s got to be a clown. i guess i am trying to figure out who is who. russell brand for rallying against capitalism or harry reid for rallying against, well, i guess capital. brand went on a tirade over the chasm between the rich and the poor. maybe he should talk to reid who will take all his dough and leave him poor. what reid is saying isn t different from what brandon is saying. we re not taxing enough. it s one thing for a comic to say that maybe for effect. it s quite another for a u.s. senate democratic leader to say that because he could have a huge effect. even on rich guys like brand. act weigh, especially rich guys ....
Bill: you mean worse than y2k? [laughter] bill: listen, what want to brinn bret baier now, good day to you. reading a couple things crossing right now. jonah s not sure harry reid would even go for this deal. what reid is apparently saying is that he s confident they will reach a comprehensive agreement this week and avoid default, then he goes on to say there are, quote, productive negotiations underway with membership mcconnell. so the mitch mcconnell. is this something the senate would take up and agree to? yeah, i think that s the big question. we re going to hear from house leaders in just a moment, and i tell you what, they re adding on to a deal that mitch mcconnell is in the process of kind of ironing out with senator reid. notice that senator reid didn t say i m working closely with speaker boehner or house republican leaders. there is a sense that the republicans in the house will need to see something. they will need to see something in their ledger in order to get ....
We wanted to do this in a bipartisan way and we kind of joked, we always thought we were plan b. we just thought nobody had a plan a. so we were glad to be plan b and glad to be there and glad to help this process. with the understanding that what you and the 12 other senators were working on is not necessarily identical to what reid and mcconnell are working on, what did that deal, your deal, look like? what are we talking about in terms of how long the government would be funded or how long the debt ceiling would be raised? great questions. we never reached the agreement, we got right to the edge of reaching the agreement, then we broke off and talked to the leadership. i think it s probably better that we not go into all those details because again, we don t know exactly what the leadership is going to do. but the important thing is if you re going to get anything done in washington, you need to do it in a bipartisan way. the talking heads don t tell you that but that s really w ....
