Shortly before Christmas, Marcus Gilbert with whom, Lynette now confesses, she had a brief affair three decades ago on the set of Barbara Cartland s A Ghost In Monte Carlo, sent her a very sweet letter . ....
From the Existential Issue: Digital journalism didn’t have to be this way I’m a journalist and an urban planner, both service professions with an ethical obligation to the public. The work of planners and journalists is deeply embedded within power structures that perpetuate racial injustice and social inequality and unfortunately, neither profession has engaged in the deep self-reflection required to change all that. My interest in the confluence of journalism and urban planning brought me to the work of Chris Gilliard, who, in his critical engagement with the media, expands on redlining, the practice of excluding certain people from access to goods or services by selectively raising prices. Gilliard’s work identifies what he and coauthor Hugh Culick refer to as “digital redlining”: algorithmic practices of online discrimination against Black communities. ....
From playboy to campaigner Credit: Rex/Brett Cove A lot of piña coladas have gone under the bridge since I first met Calum Best on a beach in Fiji back in 2005, when he was a contestant on ITV’s first-ever Love Island. He was launching what would become a prolific TV career, spanning almost two decades and a mind-boggling 45 reality shows around the world. ‘Do you remember that trip? It was the best!’ he says, as we catch up in a sunny courtyard in Fulham, south-west London, close to his flat. ‘When I got kicked off they asked me if I wanted to stay. I was 24, lying on a beach surrounded by beautiful women, drinking cocktails – hell yes, I was going to stay!’ ....
From Marcus Rashford to Maro Itoje, Jay Z’s Roc Nation is re-inventing celebrity Susannah Butter ‘A new chapter, let’s go,’ rugby player Maro Itoje wrote on his Instagram page. The England star was announcing that he had just signed to Roc Nation, American rapper Jay-Z’s management company, in November. Talented, eloquent and politically engaged, the 26-year-old Itoje is a perfect fit; Jay-Z’s juggernaut agency also represents footballer Marcus Rashford. Since Roc Nation expanded into European sport six years ago it has steadily been disrupting the way sports stars are seen and the impact they create. Last week, Itoje lived up to the nickname he has among rugby fans Super Maro by launching a campaign urging the UK Government to give free laptops to the 1.78 million children who currently cannot take part in online lessons because they lack adequate computers at home. ....
Sam Copeland Being forced to learn from home during the pandemic is no doubt disruptive enough for schoolchildren. For those, however, whose families can’t afford the expensive equipment needed to participate in remote learning, the barriers are even greater. Now England rugby player Maro Itoje, dubbed ‘Super Maro’ for his sporting prowess, has proved himself worthy of the accolade in the sphere of educational equality, too. The Old Harrovian and former Tatler cover star is helping tackle the school laptop shortage, which is leaving a huge number of young people unfairly disadvantaged. Advertisement At a time when the government has repeatedly been accused of falling short in their obligations to the public, a number of high profile figures from outside the political sphere have stepped up to demand that they do better. Like his fellow sportsman, footballer Marcus Rashford, and his campaigning for free school meals, Itoje has utilised the platform affor ....
