The National Weather Service has announced that new Destructive Thunderstorms warnings will now be sent to cell phones. According to today s news release, the National Weather Service said that when there are severe thunderstorms in your area that are deemed destructive, an Emergency Alert will be activated in the normal ways (television, radio, etc.,), and a new WEA, or Wireless Emergency Alert, will also be sent to cell phones. The parameters given by the National Weather Service as to what they consider destructive thunderstorms include hail with at least 2.75 inches in diameter and/or winds at or in excess of 80 miles per hour. ....
Ten St. Mary Parish Residents Charged with FEMA Fraud Ten people accused of defrauding FEMA out of a total of $60,000 have been indicted on federal charges. Brittany Hawkins, Shannan Johnson, Tasha Louis, Jarnelle Payne, Leo Green, Jr., Derrick Kirt, Jarmaine Thomas, Jr., and Johnathan Wilson, all of Franklin; Kevin Callery, of Baldwin; and Robert Johnson, Jr., of Patterson, are all charged with theft of government property and fraud in connection with major disaster or emergency benefits. The U. S. Attorney s Office says the defendants worked together to lie on FEMA claims applications to receive transportation benefits and to get paid for cars they claimed were flooded during the historic weather event. According to prosecutors, the defendants claimed their cars were damaged by flooding in Lafayette and Iberia Parishes despite living in St. Mary Parish, which was not included in the presidential disaster declaration. ....

Earthquake Strikes Near Shreveport The United States Geological Survey is reporting a magnitude 3.0 earthquake in northwestern Louisiana. According to the USGS, that earthquake struck at 2:26 a.m. The quake s epicenter was located in a nature park about three miles west of the town of Blanchard. For perspective, the epicenter is about 12 miles northwest of Shreveport, about nine miles south of Caddo Lake, about five miles north-northwest of Cross Lake, and a little more than five miles east of the Texas State Line. The USGS says the earthquake was shallow, occurring at a depth of about five kilometers (approximately 3.1 miles). The USGS says shaking was moderate. They say they expect any damage to property to be minor. ....
