Cape Town - The provincial department of environmental affairs and development planning has said the post of environmental commissioner in the provincial constitution is no longer desirable and should be dropped.
In a presentation to the standing committee on the premier and constitutional matters which held a public hearing on the Constitution of the Western Cape First Amendment Bill, the department’s chief director Ayub Mohamed argued the post was a duplication of roles and responsibilities.
“The post is undesirable because it will consume scarce state resources and will not address gaps in governance and in any case national and provincial legislation already provide adequately for the protection of the environment. ....

Cape Town - People, organisations and stakeholders in the Western Cape have been invited to have their say on the Constitution of the Western Cape First Amendment Bill (B1–2021).
The Western Cape government’s Standing Committee on the Premier and Constitutional Matters has invited stakeholders, interested people and organisations to make submissions on bill.
The purpose of the amendment bill is to amend the Constitution of the Western Cape 1997, so as to align it with the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, with regard to the loss of membership of the provincial parliament, the calling and setting of dates for an election of the provincial parliament, the definition of a money bill, provincial intervention in local government, the imposition of surcharges by the provincial parliament and the raising of loans by the Western Cape Gover ....

Cape Town - The ANC is rallying legislators and citizens of the province to fight attempts to block the establishment of an environmental commissioner ahead of the public participation process in the Constitution of the Western Cape First Amendment Bill on Tuesday.
Speaking in the legislature during Thursday’s sitting, leader of the provincial opposition Cameron Dugmore (ANC) urged legislators to fight the move to scrap the environmental commissioner post from the provincial constitution.
