SOUTH BEND â A 16-year-old who was shot Monday afternoon on Fellows Street died from his injuries in the hospital. The boy, Edwardo Rivera, was one of three people shot Monday in South Bend and his death marks the 13th reported shooting, and the third fatal shooting, in the city since the beginning of April. âI know many of the people out here, and they are frustrated,â said South Bend Police Chief Scott Ruszkowski on Monday at the scene on Fellows Street. âWhen the weather gets better, more people get outside. When more people go outside, thereâs more opportunity for paths to cross.â ....
SOUTH BEND â A south Bend man faces nine criminal counts, including murder and attempted murder, in connection to the death of 28-year-old Lateisha Burnett on April 1. Prosecutors say Kenneth Dogan, 41, got into an altercation with some of Burnett s friends at Cheers Pub in Roseland before driving to West Dunham Street and shooting into a house where she was staying. Dogan is charged with two counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder and one count of voluntary manslaughter in addition to other felony counts of battery and criminal recklessness. Dogan was previously charged with battery and invasion of privacy for the incident at the bar, but prosecutors filed the additional charges Wednesday. ....
SOUTH BEND â In the first week of April of last year, South Bend police responded to one shooting. Over the past seven days, 10 people were shot in the city, prompting local officials to call for broader community engagement. âEvery single weekend itâs been nice so far this year, our screen has been red,â South Bend Police Chief Scott Ruszkowski said at a town hall Thursday. âEvery cop in our city has been tied up, weâve had to have St. Joseph County Police and Indiana State Police come in and help us.â Others at the town hall, hosted by Justice For Michiana, emphasized the need for a wider array of community members to help curb the recent violence. ....
