Times & Star letters: Covid restrictions are painful – but worth it in the end

IN early December you kindly published my letter on Covid-19 precautions and my message to the Government then was: “Don’t stop now!”
As we understand Boris Johnson is about to announce the plans for the relaxation of lockdown on Monday, my message is still “don’t stop now” – or at least “only take the brakes off slowly”.
The Prime Minister has said himself that he wants this to be the last lockdown. To achieve this we should be aiming for a Covid zero, or nearly zero, policy.
Other countries such as Australia, New Zealand and South Korea have achieved this and not only have their Covid-19 statistics (including the tragic toll of deaths) been much better than ours but they have been able to at least partially reopen their economies. ....

Recognition for West Cumbrian man's support for MacMillan

A MAN who had cancer has devoted a lifetime to collecting for charity as a way of being able to give something back.
John Wilkinson, 84, from Broughton Moor, first started collecting in 1978, in gratitude for the care he received whilst recovering from bowel cancer. He said: “I can’t praise the team at West Cumberland hospital enough. I wanted to give something back.”
He has now been rewarded with a certificate and letter of thanks by cancer charity Macmillan for raising an incredible £231,752.03 in his 40 years of collecting.
It came as a surprise to John, who thanked family and the community for their contributions over the years. He said: “I’ve had great help from family, from my wife Kathleen and my sister-in-law Phyllis Barnes. I am extremely grateful for the support I’ve had from the communities in Broughton Moor, Flimby, Maryport and Seaton.” ....
