The PPS School Board OK s an alternative mascot for Ida B. Wells-Barnett High School in Southwest Portland.
After an abrupt pivot away from an evergreen tree as a new mascot, Ida B. Wells-Barnett High School will now be known as the Guardians. Guardians will replace the school s current Trojan mascot.
The revised mascot was approved unanimously Tuesday, April 27, by the Portland Public Schools Board. Nearly a month earlier, the board paused its consideration of the Evergreens as the Southwest Portland high school s new mascot after a board member noted concern from community members of using a tree at a high school that had recently been renamed to honor a historic Black journalist and NAACP co-founder. The tree could conjure up reminders of lynching, Board Director Michelle DePass noted. ....

Portland teens at center of landmark changes in schools
Local students led charge for anti-discrimination program, school name change at Portland Public Schools.
While historic efforts to combat racism and discrimination within Portland s schools are afoot, Southwest Portland students have been at the forefront of change.
On Tuesday, Feb. 9, the Portland Public Schools Board of Directors recognized February as Black History Month, while also unanimously approving an Anti-Racist and Anti-Oppression Learning Community policy banning hate symbols and hate speech from school settings. The policy stems from the Oregon Board of Education s adoption of All Students Belong, which prohibits depictions of the Confederate flag, swastika or noose for any school-sponsored activities, with exceptions for teaching curriculum. ....

Southwest Portland school hosts No Place for Hate web seminar
Ida B. Wells-Barnett High School will host Community Conversation About Race
The recently renamed Ida B. Wells-Barnett High School will host a No Place for Hate-Community Conversation About Race web seminar Wednesday evening, Feb. 3, from 6 to 8 p.m.
The event is being hosted in partnership with the Anti-Defamation League Pacific Northwest.
The event will focus on combating racism and prejudice through dialogue.
Our peer facilitators have been working to prepare for this event since early November, said Ayesha Coning, a vice principal at Wells-Barnett High School.
Coning said school leaders are expecting a sizable turnout, including a few elected officials. ....

Aslan Newson is part of the high school s Black Student Union.
As a Black woman, having the place that I go to school every single day … having a place that I know represents me as a Black woman, means the world to me, Newson told the school board. When you re going to a school of someone who was named after a slave owner or KKK member, or a white supremacist, that takes a toll on your entire educational career and it s not fair. We are very fortunate to be able to have this opportunity to rename our school, but there are many other schools in our PPS district that need renaming as well. ....
