Study shows preventability of adverse fetal or neonatal outcomes

A study led by a Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington researcher shows more than half of adverse fetal or neonatal outcomes linked to women with life-threatening complications in pregnancy could have been prevented.
the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Obstetrics and Gynacology, found fetal or neonatal harm associated with severe maternal morbidity (SMM) was potentially preventable in 54.1 percent of the 85 cases reviewed. Adverse outcomes include death and admission to a neonatal intensive care unit or special care baby unit.
Preventability was related to maternal antenatal/peripartum care (in utero) in 39 percent of cases, initial neonatal care (ex utero) in 36 percent, and to both maternal and neonatal care in 20 percent of cases. ....

The capital city will see graduates of Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington celebrate the successful completion of their studies this week.
More than 2,840 qualifications will be awarded to 2,593 graduates across seven ceremonies. A further 37 graduates unable to attend previous ceremonies due to COVID-19 related disruption will also attend. This year the University is delighted to recognise its first Master of Communication at a graduation ceremony, on Thursday 20 May.
The University’s Chancellor, Neil Paviour-Smith, congratulates those graduating.
“This week’s ceremonies are extraordinary for the fact we are fortunate to be able to join and celebrate together in person. COVID-19 meant all our students had a very challenging year of study in 2020 especially those in their final year. So it is wonderful to be able to recognise the successful completion of their qualifications in this way. ....
