It s disappearing very quickly. it is very dilute. as you go farther and farther from the wellhead, the small, microscopic droplets of oil are very quickly diluted into parts per million. parts per million, that s very, very dilute. and farther away from the wellhead, it s even more dilute. but dilute and out of sight doesn t necessarily mean benign. and we remain concerned about the long-term impacts, both on the marshes and the wildlife, but also beneath the surface and are actively studying that, both as part of our federal response and in partnership with much of the academic community that is also very interested in the overall long-term impacts of this. seems like we ve been getting more good news than bad news out of the gulf. ....

More on our story regarding the static kill. it s apparently worked on bp s damaged oil well in the gulf of mexico. everybody hopes so. the point man on the operation, thad allen, says he s confident there will be no more oil leaking into the gulf from this well. the white house is careful to say there s plenty more work ahead but the talk is mild compared to what officials say the last couple of months. listen to a top government scientist today. key conclusions of the report is the vast majority of the oil eevaporated, burned, skimmed, recovered from the wellhead or dispersed and much of the dispersed oil is in the process of rapid degradation. most of the estimated 205 million gallons of oil again, 205 million gallons of oil that poured into the gulf ....

Wellhead s pipe yesterday. this morning s the new york times reports that three-quarters of the gulf disaster oil has already evaporat evaporated, dispersed or otherwise eliminated. that is according to a government report due out today which is expected to say that what is left of the crude does not seem to pose much additional risk. here with us now from the white house, assistant to the president for energy and climate change, carol browner. thank you for being on the show. i know there was a lot of discrepancy and concern on our show yesterday. the epa says the chemical used there is generally no more or less tock toxic than other alternatives. how do you really know, though? the epa has done extensive studies on dispersants. a decision was made to dramatically reduce the amount ....

Sitting, circulating, doing nothing, waiting on this static kill that s going on now. had they just kept going, i think they could have already had the well killed instead of doing all this nonsense from the top. and the prospects, as you said, it s going to be a while before we have any idea if the static kill has worked. what is the definition of success and how is it to be determined? well, the way kent wells described it in his very brief briefing today was that they think it s successful if there s zero pressure on the well. and that s the classic definition for a killed well, is one where you have zero pressure showing on the wellhead. of course, here, since it s in 5,000 feet of water, there s going to be hydrostatic pressure, but that pressure on the very top of the well should read zero. but having said that, you don t know if that well s actually killed down below, because all the damage down below, it could be flowing into another zone. it could be flowing someplace else ....
