Wellesley softball program finally gets its field of dreams

WELLESLEY  Eight years ago, Emily Willrich wrote a letter to the Wellesley Townsman with a simple question:
Why are the boys baseball fields so much nicer than the girls softball fields? Willrich, then 12 years old, asked.
According to the Townsman article, the boys played night games under the lights, had public address announcers and a scoreboard. The girls softball games didn t have any of that.
For Willrich, who wasn t even a teenager yet, she knew that there was a clear disparity between the boys baseball experience and the girls softball experience.
However, not much really came of her letter in terms of actually improving the experience of Wellesley softball players. All it did was result in a few meet and greets with Willrich and pioneers of women s rights such as Gloria Steinem (still a thrill regardless).  ....

Wellesley High School's building manager, Tom Zinck, dies at age 67

Humor. Loyalty. Laughter. Love. These are just a few of the words family and friends use to describe Tom Zinck, the long-time building manager for Wellesley High School and Town of Wellesley employee whose quiet and thoughtful manner made such an impact on students, faculty, and the entire Wellesley community.
“Mr. Zinck treated all of us with such kindness and light, and could always provide a laugh or an ear,” said one WHS graduate. Added a WHS faculty member, “I’m grateful for his jokes that made you feel human, and his kindness and respect toward everyone and everything around him.” ....

In with Indigenous Day, out with Columbus Day in Wellesley

Wicked Local
Regardless of which side they were on, the one thing most people who spoke up at Monday s Select Board discussion of the replacement of Columbus Day could agree on was that it was a difficult and often painful decision.
In the end, the board sided 4-1 with the voters who on March 2 supported a non-binding resolution changing the second Monday in October to Indigenous Peoples Day. That change affects only the town calendars. The day remains as Columbus Day at the federal and state level.
Town Meeting had voted last summer to support the change to Indigenous Peoples  Day.                                              ....
