Electric car charging ports come to Stanhope this March


THE installation of the new electric vehicle (EV) charging network in Weardale, is about to begin.
Following a competitive tender by Durham County Council, the contract for the works has been awarded to Gronn Kontakt (UK) Ltd who are working with their trusted delivery partner Elmtronics Ltd, based in Consett.
The project will see 20 chargepoints at eight sites across Stanhope, which means that all residents will have a chargepoint within a five-minute drive from their home.
This project is funded by OZEV (Office of Zero Emission Vehicles) and is being viewed as a national demonstrator of how Government can encourage the switch to electric vehicles, both cars and small vans. ....

TOURISM has arguably been the hardest hit industry due to the lockdowns and pandemic, however the industry is hopeful of finding ways to recover.
County Durham has a thriving tourist economy, with sites like Durham Cathedral, Bishop Auckland’s Auckland Project and Knyren, and the Durham Dales of Weardale and Teesdale.
The pandemic has decimated the county’s tourism sector and has emphasised just how important the visitor economy is.
In 2019, more than 20 million visitors came to the county, contributing £955m to the local economy.
By September 2020, the forecast was for a fall of 43.6 per cent in annual visits in 2020, equating to a loss of £434.63m, and an estimated reduction of 5,587 jobs. ....

Durham Chairman's Medals for county's role model residents


SEVEN County Durham residents have been recognised for outstanding community service and fundraising.
Durham County Council s Chairman, Councillor Katie Corrigan, awarded The Chairman s Medal – the highest honour the council has to recognise the voluntary service of individuals and organisations – to the winners via online presentations, due to coronavirus restrictions.
Raymond Pye has supported Sherburn Village Community Centre for decades, as treasurer for 45 years and helping with odd jobs, calling the bingo and cooking breakfasts. He has also been a school governor and parish councillor and was a governor at Sherburn House.
Peter Hall recently marked 40 years of service with the Boys’ Club at Woodhouse Close, in Bishop Auckland, where was he was treasurer and on the board of trustees. ....

Weardale Adventure Centre calls to save industry on its knees | Darlington and Stockton Times


The Weardale Adventure Centre, in Ireshopeburn, has taken children on adventures in Upper Weardale for decades.
It was previously owned by the YMCA, but when the centre fell into administration the current team bought the building and kept it going.
Now, the centre faces its biggest challenge yet. As a result of the Covid pandemic, all school trips have been cancelled, holidaymakers have been scarce, and the business has been put in a tight spot.
As the lockdowns have increased, schools started cancelling activities and asking for a refund because many are not able to travel outside of their tiers. ....
