A Gros Ventre gunfight and more May Park memories


I received a phone call just before Christmas from
Rebecca “Betty” Simpson Fleet, who lives in Oregon. She was born in Jackson Hole, delivered by Dr. Huff in 1928. Her mother,
Effie Wilson Imeson Simpson, was the first white child born in Jackson Hole.
Betty lived on a ranch and traveled 5 miles to school in a covered sleigh pulled by a team of horses. The sleigh had a woodstove to keep the children warm. Betty’s job was to sit on the front seat with driver
Dick Sewell and keep the horses going at a good pace. When they hit pavement they would unhook the horses from the sled and hook them to a rubber-tired wagon that would complete the journey to the school. ....
