(WXYZ) — For the last two months Terry Atkins, and his siblings, have been working around the clock, trying to find a vaccine for their 94-year-old mother, Fritzi Atkins, who lives alone in Plymouth.
My wife alone probably 350 calls or more, said Atkins who lives in North Carolina. We were even going down into Ohio trying to find a place for her to go. ....

COVID-19 pandemic affects birth rates in Holmes, Wayne counties

WOOSTER  Five or so years down the road, kindergarten classes statewide most likely will have a few fewer youngsters starting their educational journey as Ohio reports a drop in births in 2020.
The Ohio Department of Health reports 129,186 births in the state in 2020, which is down more than 5,000 from the 134,560 deliveries in 2019.
Locally, Wayne County has followed that trend, with 2,150 recorded in 2020, down from 2,245 in 2019, according to the Wayne County Health Department.
But, heading south about 20 miles, a few more babies were born in 2020 than in 2019. Holmes County s Health Department shows 669 births in 2020, and 638 in 2019.
The drop statewide, and in Wayne County, could, in some fashion, be related to the year of the pandemic. For a Wooster couple, it was. With plans to grow their family starting in March 2020, Raymond and Geren Cunningham chose caution because of the unknowns about COVID-19. ....

COVID vaccines: Schools plan for staff shortages after vaccinations

At least one area school district canceled classes this week when it didn’t have enough teachers or substitutes to cover a normal day. And now more districts are taking a look at vaccination schedules and putting plans in place in case of staff absences.
Fairless Local in Stark County called off school on Monday due to high teacher absences. District staff had received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine on Saturday. Some of the Monday absences were due to side effects experienced by staff members.
“Some staff had normal side effects described by the health department and medical professionals,” said Broc Bidlack, superintendent of the Stark County district. “It wasn’t anything out of the ordinary.” ....
