As Austin-area residents start assessing damage to their homes and properties from the historic winter freeze and snow, those needing essential supplies or services got some help from Travis County leaders against businesses that want to jack up prices. The Travis County Commissioners Court voted Friday to extend a local state of disaster declaration, extending to residents protections from price gouging of food, water, hotel rooms and other supplies needed to make homes livable again. The orders also allow Travis County officials to access emergency funds. County Judge Andy Brown called an emergency meeting at noon Friday to continue the local state of disaster declaration, which was first issued Sunday after roads began to ice over. The disaster declaration will persist until it is terminated by the Commissioners Court. ....

(Shutterstock) AUSTIN, TX All of Austin Water s treatment plants are once again generating water and filling the city s reservoir, a hopeful first step in restoring water service to the city, the utility provider said Friday morning. Overnight, the city s three treatment plants produced some 86 million gallons of water, according to the utility provider. The plants typically produce 140 million gallons of water each day during the winter. One of the city s plants went down on Wednesday amid a power outage, leading to a loss of water pressure and causing the reservoir to become dangerously low. Austin Water Director Greg Meszaros said once the reservoir is refilled, various water mains will be reopened as infrastructure is tested and repaired, he said. ....
