West Hartford Conard High School s (CT) Gavin Sherry has been relatively quiet most of the season, but on Thursday at the CIAC State Open Outdoor Championships he had his big breakthrough race.
The junior clocked a new US No. 1 time of 4:01.88 in the 1,600m.
His mark bettered Archbishop Wood (PA) junior Gary Martin s time of 4:02.15 by a little less than a half a second. Martin earned his now-US No. 2 performance last weekend at the John Hay Pennsylvania Distance Festival.  
More importantly, Sherry s time shatters the previous Connecticut State record of 4:08.42 set by Brien McMahon High School s (CT) Eric Van Der Els in 2016. ....
