very much about unity and pulling people together whereas today elizabeth warren was really talking about fighting, fight, fight, fight. that was the word that kept coming up in her speech. i went to count the number of times about fighting, fighting washington corruption and big corporation, fighting big banks who don t treat regular people very well. she wrapped the whole day in a discussion of labor unions and harkened to the days of this old labor town, this old mill town lawrence when a very famous strike took place launched the labor movement. it was a very i want to say almost puth list tick speech but laced with humor and laced with some barbs against president trump but it really wasn t a speech about president trump. it was really a speech about how she s going to fight for the middle class and for workers. if you re a fan of elizabeth warren s it was a very well delivered speech and if you re not sure about her, she probably
judiciary committee as staff lawyer as well. all of the above. and i ve never seen a witness that again, we are in a partisan environment, this is democrats and republicans, it s divided government, and certainly, you know, there s always going to be a tension between the executive branch and the legislative. but this is pretty remarkable. joyce, your reactions as well, one republican, louie gohmert, was asking the acting attorney general about some comments he had made about the border. and he said he wasn t familiar with that speech. well, it wasn t a speech, it was part of the opening statement that he read to this committee this very day. you know, whitaker s demeanor makes it clear that he s not interested in answering questions. he s just hoping that he can somehow survive this untarnished. so he s making that sort of careless, sloppy mistake, not acknowledging his own opening statement, looking incredibly grateful to be saved by the five-minute bell, and it s clear that
good and we will continue to be. my responsibility and duty is to the people of america. he hit the soviet union and cuba and the death struggle over communism and what it s done the people. i think mara is right for there was a little bit for everybody in this speech. could ve been the best speech of the presidency so far. bret: i ve talked about this earlier. the joint address, saudi arabia, warsaw, the outlier of afghan policy. in the the you saw the outlf a trump doctrine. i think the doctrine comes down to a hardheaded realism but as a realism in the sense of articulate what kind of government identifying the flaws of government, for example. iran and venezuela. standing up and articulating specific challenges in terms of american interests, why you have
the world and every national leader by extension should put its own interests and the interests of its citizens first. that this is ultimately the way we see progress. this is ultimately how countries become the best possible versions of themselves. he really flesh that out a little bit today and i think that was something that s going to resonate with people when they stop and think about it. that america first is not just for the united states but in ideology and model for everybod everybody. stu and i will ask secretary tillerson about that coming up. thank you. what do you think will happen between the u.s. and north korea and what was your take on the president s speech today? let me know on twitter @bretbaier. use the hashtag #specialreport or on facebook at facebook.com/bretbaiersr. some new developments tonight in the investigation of russia s efforts to interfere in last year s u.s. election. we have fox team coverage.
he i think stayed within the mainstream of foreign policy. the big takeaways were what sounded like laying the predicate to get out of the iran nuclear deal. bret: laura. i think people who last week were concerned donald trump was straying from his conservative populist nationalist stance on issues would hear this speech today and think wow. he invoked sovereignty and the nation-state so many times in this speech while he also continued to remind the world that a weekend america would not be helpful on the world stage. at the same time, the u.n. question, he slammed the u.n. human rights commission and how it had become a laughingstock not living up to the ideals of the u.n. saying we want to work with everyone, especially our allies but we want to work for a better world, a more peaceful world. his responsibility first and foremost is to the american people. he stood firm with the america
