minister has just confirmed there have been deaths following this massive earthquake in haiti. there are no official numbers yet. haiti as a state that is in dire straits. last month, the head of state, the prime minister, was assassinated. it s going to take some time to get any handle on the amount of deaths that we ve seen in light of this earthquake. i spoke to a friend in port-au-prince before coming on air. he was in bed this morning at about 8:30 when the earthquake shook. the earthquake, he told me, went on for over a minute of tremors, and that was in port-au-prince. as you said in your introduction, this earthquake is bigger in terms of the richter scale than the massive earthquake that shook and devastated haiti in 2010. that earthquake killed an estimated 100,000 to 300,000 people, apocalyptic levels of destruction, sadness, and death. and as the death count comes in in the following days, we can only hope that it s not as terrible as what happened 11 years ago. b
