Legend remembered in Washingtonville during historic marker event


Its history dates back to the Civil War era. After buying a manse on North Street, the First Presbyterian Church in 1854 reserved an initial five to six acres for a cemetery, recognizing the need for a community burying ground. More land was acquired for the cemetery in1864 and 1935, according to the cemetery committee. The 10-acre site is still active.
This was just one of the steps to getting the community to notice that hey, we re still here, we re taking care of this (cemetery) and we would like you to care about it, too, said Jill Moore, a member of the cemetery committee. ....
